Shape & Consciousness exhibition
The theme of this exhibition revolves around "shaping" and "stream of consciousness." It aims to explore the relationship between form and content in contemporary art and how art can be used to express and convey the concept of the stream of consciousness. Through the creative works of artists, the audience will be presented with a unique journey of the heart. The exhibition will showcase the artists' works through various forms and media, allowing the audience to gain a deeper understanding of the diversity and richness of art and culture. Please stay tuned for the latest updates on this exhibition.
The exhibition will showcase works in different mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, and film. We will invite artists from various backgrounds to participate and demonstrate their understanding and expression of "shaping" and "consciousness flow." Artists draw inspiration from everyday life and transform these infinite concepts into tangible forms, grounding the themes in the realities of daily experiences, making them more relatable.
The exhibition will present the artists' works through various forms and mediums, allowing the audience to gain a deeper understanding of the diversity and richness of art and culture. Additionally, we will host a series of related activities, including artist talks, guided tours, and workshops, providing opportunities for the audience to delve into the creative process and thoughts of the artists and engage in interaction and dialogue with them. These activities will offer a platform for exploring art and culture, fostering global exchange and collaboration among artists.

Autumn concert
On Sunday, September 24th, the Hong Kong International Youth Artists Society successfully held the "Autumn Concert" at Axiom Hall in Causeway Bay. We were honored to have the presence of Mr. Manling Cheung, Chairman of the HIYA, and Miss Chantelle Huang, President, who joined us on this marvelous musical journey. The performances by the Hong Kong Artists' Gallery Orchestra (AGO) were captivating, and the repertoire was diverse and engaging. Through the universal language of music, which transcends borders, we were able to communicate and unite with one another.

Maria Hassabi: I’ll Be Your Mirror is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Asia. Comprising elements of performance, sound, photography and painting, the exhibition brings her pathbreaking practice to Hong Kong, with all works newly commissioned for Tai Kwun's architectural environment. The central body of work on 3/F gravitates around the production of image through the usage of mirrors dressed in gold, playing with the myriad meanings and representations of gold in ancient and contemporary myths—as a colour in divination, as a symbolic representation of capitalism, or even a kitsch sample from pop culture. The paradox between the immutability of gold and the shifting perceptions of its representation echoes the tensions in Hassabi’s practice—between subjects and objects, dance and sculpture, the live body and still images, the spectacular and the everyday.

In the history of Chinese painting, there are quite some painter couples. Few, however, have the husband and wife matching each other in artistic accomplishment as did Xie Zhiliu (1910 – 1997) and Chen Peiqiu (1923 – 2020), both of whom were leading calligrapher-painters of the Shanghai School in their own right. On his part and on hers, they found in each other not only a companion on their journey of life but also a soulmate during their exploration of art. Treading their own paths, they devoted themselves to studying and advancing traditional Chinese art, eventually achieving individuality through their compatible yet dissimilar practice of brush and ink. More than just artists, both husband and wife were eminent authenticators and researchers, contributing immensely to the development of modern Chinese painting both as an art and as an academic discipline.

Accepting an interview with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK)
Mr. Fan Chun has been invited to be interviewed by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) to share his journey and development in kickstarting his artistic life in Hong Kong, as well as the process of establishing the "Flow Art Movement". Born into an intellectual family in Dapu, Guangdong, Mr.Fan Chun has been practicing calligraphy and studying classical Chinese literature since childhood. At the age of 12, he settled in Hong Kong with his family, where he embarked on his artistic journey. Due to his love for art, he pursued painting while working, gaining comprehensive and systematic mastery of various techniques such as watercolor, ink wash, oil painting, lacquer painting, and commercial art. He later enrolled in the Western Art Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong School of Continuing and Professional Studies, delving into expressing thoughts and emotions through oil painting. Having settled in Hong Kong at the age of 12, it had already become Mr. Fan Chun's spiritual home. His artwork "Harbour" depicts a Hong Kong landscape, using variations in ink intensity to demonstrate the spatial distance: distant mountains rise and fall continuously, while nearby people diligently work near meandering rivers and streams. Hong Kong is a bustling metropolis that also preserves a realm of traditional tranquility, serving as the best harbor for those who struggle and seek respite from their endeavors. After his exploration with oil painting, Mr. Fan Chun shifted his focus to studying Eastern painting traditions. Influenced by the Zen philosophy of simplicity in Japanese ink painting, he incorporated Zen elements into his works, employing restrained colors and leaving ample blank spaces, allowing viewers to engage their imagination and find inner peace. By expressing Eastern thinking through Western techniques, his works merge the East and the West, showcasing a unique style.
Pouring love onto humanity and enabling others to feel the existence of love, Mr. Fan Chun believes that the brush is a medium for transmitting love. Inspired by the scripture of the Diamond Sutra, "All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, or a shadow," he views any artwork merely as a tool for expressing thoughts. Through continuous exploration, Mr. Fan Chun established the "Flow Art Movement," which showcases three progressive levels of concrete, abstract, and imaginative elements in his paintings. Thus, the artwork truly comes to life upon its separation from the creator. Within the flow art works, Mr. Fan Chun creates illusions with his brush, and these illusions are manifestations of love .

Depicting Children's Loneliness - Yoshitomo Nara
I recently visited an art museum in Perth, Australia, where there was an exhibition featuring the renowned Japanese contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara. His artworks are filled with exploration of Japanese children's culture and emotional world. Often, you can see young girls and boys squinting their eyes, combining cuteness with melancholy. They are often accompanied by elements like small dogs, toys, and flowers, evoking memories of a joyful childhood.
However, Yoshitomo Nara's artworks are actually quite controversial, reflecting a deeper phenomenon. For instance, in the showcased sculptures, which are based on sketches, these unpainted pieces have a considerable size, indicating significant time investment. The protagonists are predominantly girls, with expressions slightly melancholic or only subtly smiling, creating an eerie yet intriguing aura. Some sculptures even focus solely on the head, accentuating their facial expressions and inner feelings.
The sculpting techniques uniquely capture each girl's distinct emotions and actions, with individual eye expressions seemingly conveying intimate messages to the viewer. Additionally, two paintings predominantly featuring vivid red hues are present. In the art market, the use of vibrant colors is relatively rare, making these pieces even more memorable. Simple black strokes portray the expressions and hair of the girls, their gaze vacant, mouths neither upturned nor downturned, yet emanating a sense of disappointment and unease. The abundant use of red intensifies the feeling of loneliness and unease within the entire artwork.
Nara's artworks go beyond depicting the innocence of childhood. His portrayal of young girls is not one of cheerfulness; instead, they appear expressionless or even angry. The expressions and behaviors within his works delve into a deeper exploration of children's inner worlds and psychological states. The emotions of solitude, unease, and fear are intricately woven into his artworks, addressing the challenges and issues children face while growing up, urging adults to pay attention to these phenomena.

Congratulations to our association member, Hu Fa Chu, whose work was selected for the "Bookish China - The Third China Illustration and Bookbinding Art Exhibition" organized by the Chinese Artists Association in August 2023.
Spirit of the Times - Wugongling Wonder
Size：39*27*5cm
Wugongling Village is located in Huangtian Township, Shexian County, Anhui Province, with an elevation of over 1100 meters. The 1200-acre terraced tea plantation here is a unique spectacle in the country. In the 1960s, under the call of "Learn from Dazhai in agriculture," the people of the whole village experienced ten years of hard work to build the terraced fields into a spectacular high-mountain stone-paved terraced tea plantation. Today, the terraced fields in Wugongling, resembling sturdy steel dragons, have endured the test of time and weather. They stand tall and firm, with rows of green curves neatly arranged between layers of stone walls, presenting a magnificent and awe-inspiring sight.
