The University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, is honoured to present Japanese Printmakers of the Twentieth-Century Renaissance: Kurosaki Akira and Nakabayashi Tadayoshi. The exhibition highlights two of Japan’s most remarkable printmakers and their influence on a resurgence of printmaking in Japan. This cultural phenomenon grew as the artists underwent rigorous training while maintaining a robust interest in traditional printing methods, such as the world-renowned woodblock technique. Through their innovative experimentation, the two printers spearheaded a revival that further developed and expanded upon established printing techniques.
The unusual juxtaposition of two contemporary artists emphasises both Kurosaki and Nakabayashi’s masterpieces and their individual contributions to the ongoing development of Japanese printmaking. This pairing also highlights the distinctiveness, cultural relevance and novelty of their work. Both born in 1937 and similarly trained, Kurosaki and Nakabayashi pursued different topics and employed distinctive colour palettes. Despite these differences, they both excelled at abstract artmaking and are celebrated for their masterful storytelling.

Art World Information
The valuation of AI-created artwork has surpassed $120,000.
One of the two major auction houses, Sotheby’s, will auction the first-ever artwork created by an "AI artist" on October 31, titled AI God. This is a series of large portraits, each measuring 64×90.5 inches (approximately 1.63×2.3 meters), and each is signed simply with the letter "A."
There are several key elements to analyze in this auction:
First, the central figure of the artwork is none other than Alan Turing, who is often referred to as the "AI God." Turing is widely recognized as the father of modern computer science and artificial intelligence. He is also known for developing the famous "Turing Test" that helped define the concept of machine intelligence.
Secondly, the auction of AI-created art is not a first in history. In 2018, Sotheby’s rival, Christie's, sold Portrait of Edmond de Belamy for $432,500, a painting generated by an AI program, which was printed on canvas.

The Magnificent Brushwork of a Republican-Era Talented Woman — Pan Su
Pan Su (1915-1992) was an outstanding female painter of the Republican era, renowned in the art world for her exceptional mastery of fine brush painting. Her unique temperament and remarkable beauty made her a prominent figure of the time. Her artistic life was full of legendary color, and her graceful yet resilient image is deeply etched in the history of Chinese art. As a painter capable of using fine brush techniques to convey a grand atmosphere, Pan Su's works not only showcased delicate craftsmanship but also conveyed a powerful and majestic presence, breaking the stereotype that fine brush painting was limited to intricate and refined details.

A Republican Beauty Blessed with Both Talent and Beauty
Pan Su, originally named Pan Baiqin, was born into a scholarly family in Jiangnan. From an early age, she demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent. Influenced by her family's cultural heritage and her own passion for painting, she quickly emerged as a rising star in the art world. However, Pan Su was not merely admired for her looks and talent. She embodied a perfect combination of beauty, intelligence, and artistic achievement. While her beauty attracted much attention, it was her mastery of painting, particularly fine brush painting, that earned her widespread recognition in the professional art world.
A Grand Atmosphere in Fine Brush Painting
Fine brush painting is known for its meticulous and delicate style in traditional Chinese art, often used to depict small, intricate subjects such as flowers, birds, and elegant women. However, Pan Su managed to incorporate a grander landscape atmosphere into the fine brush style, presenting vast and profound natural scenes with meticulous brushwork. This was extremely rare at the time and became the most distinctive feature of her artistic style. Her works, such as Spring River Among Cloud Peaks and Snow Accumulating on Pines, reflected her deep understanding of nature and her intense emotional projection. Under her brush, the rigorous detail of fine brush painting did not seem constrained but rather added a refined beauty to the majestic natural scenes.
Very few could reach the artistic heights of expressing such a grand atmosphere through fine brush painting. Through precise lines and meticulous color treatment, she infused her seemingly tranquil scenes with a sense of grandeur, allowing viewers to feel as though they were immersed in the natural world, experiencing the greatness of nature and the power of life.

Her Life with Zhang Boju
Pan Su’s name is inseparable from that of the famous collector Zhang Boju. The two were not only life partners but also companions on their artistic journeys. Pan Su received tremendous support from her husband in her artistic pursuits, and together they dedicated themselves to preserving national cultural relics. Especially during times of national crisis, Pan Su resolutely sold her dowry to help Zhang Boju purchase the national treasure Spring Outing to prevent it from being lost overseas. Her patriotic spirit and selfless devotion further elevated her stature.
Her companionship with Zhang Boju also gave Pan Su the opportunity to observe numerous precious paintings and calligraphic masterpieces. These artistic treasures provided her with rich inspiration and nourishment for her own creations. Drawing from the fine brush and rich color techniques of the Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties, she gradually developed her own unique style, becoming one of the representative figures of the blue-and-green landscape painting school of her time.

The Immortal Artistic Legacy
Pan Su produced an extensive body of work throughout her career, creating numerous masterpieces in her later years. Her landscape paintings were highly revered in China and were often presented as national gifts to foreign dignitaries, showcasing the unique charm of traditional Chinese culture. Her works were not just beautiful paintings, but also deep reflections and emotional expressions of her understanding of nature, life, and her nation.
In her later years, Pan Su reached the peak of her artistic creation. Each of her pieces reflected her dedication to art and her love for life. In 1992, Pan Su passed away due to illness, but her artistic achievements and life story remain forever etched in the hearts of those who remember her.
Conclusion
Pan Su, this beautiful and talented woman of the Republican era, wrote an immortal chapter in art with her fine brushwork. Not only did she demonstrate the grand atmosphere within fine brush painting with her superb skills, but her resilience and dedication to cultural preservation made her a shining star in the history of Chinese art. Today, through her works and life, we rediscover this remarkable woman who will continue to be remembered by the world!
