MYTH MAKERS — SPECTROSYNTHESIS III

Venue: 1/F, 3/F Galleries (JC Contemporary) F Hall, Old Bailey St, Central, Hong Kong

Dates and Time: 24 Dec 2022 - 10 Apr 2023 Tue–Sun | 11am–7pm

Myth Makers—Spectrosynthesis III circles around the core notion of “queer mythologies” and delves into modern and contemporary mythologies along with practices of the body, by gathering a diverse range of artistic idioms related to LGBTQ+ perspectives from over 50 artists from Asia and its diasporas.

Myth Makers unfolds through three distinctive chapters and encompasses newly produced artworks, historical works from the 1950s–1990s, as well as artworks on loan from the collection of the Sunpride Foundation. In bringing together such a plethora of artistic perspectives and vocabularies, Myth Makers endeavours to present a multiplicity of conversations, representations, and anti-representations of stories, individuals and communities. While the bulk of the exhibition focuses on living artists, some visionary and transformative figures of the past will also be underscored, including artists who lived in times when present-day LGBTQ+ identifications were not possible.

Seeing Gods At A Glance! Long Museum celebrates 10th birthday with a visual feast

A visual feast of 260 works of art in two formidable exhibitions, "Being in the World" and "Multiple Sight," is presented to mark the 10th anniversary of the Long Museum at West Bund, Shanghai.

"Being in the World" has about 150 works that mostly focus on human figures. "It is conceived in response to our yearning for social encounters and being in the world through the prism of the artist's eye, especially under the current situation of COVID-19 pandemic," curator Iwona Blazwick said.

"Multiple Sight," seeks to provide an opportunity for viewers to appreciate abstract works from various periods, countries, genres and forms.  In more than 120 works, the artists continually research the interrelationships of components such as line, shape, space and color, use a variety of materials and investigate visual and psychological effects, color and emotional responses. Ms. Wang Wei is the curator for this exhibition.

Art Work by Our Members

Cheung Yiu Hong | HIYA Member

I am a Hong Kong local painter. I study Western art under Taiwanese painter Mr. Hu Kaiping in my early years. I typically painted with impasto and strong brushstrokes, giving my art works a feeling of raw and direct force.

In addition to different types of operas, Chinese operas are also including opera, dance, chanting, martial arts and other movements. I especially like their costumes and all kinds of martial arts tumbling moves. Every movement dances to the beat of the music. Since he was a child, he has received many stories about the Three Kingdoms and Guan Gong, so this time he chose to use Guan Gong as the theme to create works that are different from traditional paintings and operas.
